What Is Cold Process Soap? (And Why It’s Better for Sensitive Skin)

What Is Cold Process Soap?

Have you heard the term cold process soap and wondered what it means? You’re not alone. It sounds complicated — but it’s really not.

Cold process soap is made by combining oils and butters with a natural lye solution, then allowing the soap to cure slowly over several weeks. That’s it. This slower process is exactly why it’s so gentle on the skin. And by the end of the curing process, there is no lye left — just beautifully made soap.

Why Glycerin Matters for Your Skin

One of the biggest benefits of cold process soap is naturally occurring glycerin. Glycerin is created during the soap-making process and helps draw moisture to your skin.

Many commercial soaps remove glycerin to sell it separately, which is one reason those bars can leave your skin feeling dry or tight. In handmade soap, it stays right where it belongs — and leaves a light, moisturizing feel behind on your skin.

Is Cold Process Soap Good for Sensitive Skin?

Cold process soap is highly customizable. That means I choose every single ingredient — and just as importantly, I choose what not to include. No harsh detergents, no unnecessary fillers, and no overpowering fragrances.

For people with sensitive skin, allergies, or skin that simply reacts “for no reason,” this matters. A lot.

Many people with reactive skin choose unscented soap because it allows their skin to rest and recover.

Cold process soap isn’t about trends or fancy claims. It’s about taking the slower route so your skin doesn’t have to work so hard. And once you’ve used a handmade bar that’s been made this way from start to finish, you can usually feel the difference.
