Why I’m Skipping Resolutions This Year

It’s that time of year again — when social feeds fill with New Year, New Me! energy, gym memberships spike, and people start choosing their “word of the year.”

But you know what? I’m sitting this one out.

I’m not against fresh starts. I love a clean slate as much as the next person. But I’ve found that resolutions — at least the way we usually make them — don’t stick. They become another version of a to-do list. Another standard we feel we’ve failed to meet. Another reason to feel behind before January is even over.

So this year, I’m trying something different.

I’m choosing systems over resolutions.

Instead of telling myself “Be more organized!” or “Eat healthier!”, I’m asking more practical questions like:

  • What can I set up once and not have to think about again?

  • What can I prep ahead so it’s not a hassle later?

  • Where can I save myself time or stress — especially around home stuff like meals?

For me, it’s going to be finally writing out a simple meal rotation. Nothing fancy — just enough to take the guesswork out of supper. It keeps me from hitting that 5 p.m. wall where I’m tired, hungry, and out of ideas.

It’s not a big change, but it’s going to make things easier. And that’s the point.

Resolutions ask: “What do I want to accomplish?”

This year I’m asking: “What matters most to me right now?”

That’s the kind of question I can actually work with. No pressure. Just a better starting point.

Whether it’s in the greenhouse, in the kitchen, or just trying to get through the week with fewer decisions — I’m looking for what’s manageable and what makes sense. Not perfect. Not all-or-nothing.

I know a lot of you — greenhouse regulars, soap lovers, fellow busy women — are probably juggling a lot, too. And maybe you’re also tired of setting big goals just for the sake of it.

So if you’re feeling that way too, I’ll say this:
You don’t need a giant plan to make things better.
You’re allowed to start small. Or not start at all.

Maybe that looks like:

  • Making one small change to your daily routine

  • Letting go of a goal that doesn’t feel like a fit anymore

  • Saying no to things that drain your time or energy

  • Or just getting through winter in one piece (yep, that counts)

What about you — are you making any resolutions this year? Or doing something different?

Leave a comment or send me a message. I’d love to know what you’re focusing on (or not focusing on) this season.
